Well put, Bill.

There are guys who are late-bloomers. But generally, most NHL stars dominated juniors at age 16 and 17.

It's nice to know that we have this sort of stockpile building at the AHL level. Raffl may be another example of this sort of depth. It's no wonder that Hexy is taking the opportunity to come back to the franchise now that the cupboard doesn't seem quite so bare.

Great article, again. But I definitely think that a year or so in the AHL will really give the Flyers a good look at what they are getting. If I were the Flyers, I wouldnt rush this kid at all. I hope he works on his defensive game before even thinking about giving this kid a shot in the AHL.

Does anyone have film on this kid? I was hoping someone would have video from Developmental Camp, but I havent found anything on the internet. In my opinion, he is one of the most intriguing prospects the Flyers have.

Bill, would you say he's the same type of player as Akeson, one who can dominate in juniors based on pure offensive skill, but may not have enough talent to be a top-6 player, and not enough defensive skill to be a bottom-6?

my long-standing crush aside, there will probably be immediate and crippling injuries on defense. that's just the way it goes for this team. i'd prefer to find a way to keep him.

Akeson was always a good point-producer in junior... the knock on him was physical limitations of his size and skating.

Straka, on the other hand, has everything going for him physically... but hasn't taken advantage of it.

If I had to bet on either of them making the NHL full-time, my money would be firmly on Akeson.

any word on schedule? some reports that they hoped to still put it out today. strickland tweeted yesterday it would be "later this week." huge day to pick out the road games to attend.

i know it is all dependent on olympic participation also.

I was really excited about Straka at first, but I have tempered my expectations. I do believe that either him, Raffl, Akeson, or Johnson will make an NHL career, and will likely be on the team next year in place of the departing Matt Read. What role they are asked to fill is the question.

Good post!

Are there any well known examples of guys tearing it up in their over age year in the CHL and being productive NHL players?
